How to set up a home lab for network penetration testing?

I want to set up a home lab for practicing network penetration testing. I have an old laptop with 16GB RAM and an i7 processor. What VMs and network configurations do you recommend? I'm interested in: - Active Directory attacks - Network scanning and enumeration - Wireless security testing Budget is limited, so free/open-source tools preferred.
